NOTES: In my self portrait 'Into thy hands I commend my spirit.', I have portrayed the precarious relationship between the creation of art and artist. The viewer looks down upon the scene. My world of art - filled with books, easel, paint, brushes and glaring white canvases - swirls around. I sit in the centre curled into almost a fetal position. Twisting, I look down on my hands. They are bound and silenced. A lifetime of fears realized. The spirit has gone and I have lost the ability to paint. The canvases will remain stacked, unfinished and white. Art books and paint tubes unopened. Who will I be? What could have been? Questions and uncertainty are all that remain.
