KERRY'S NOTES: ‘The lyrics of Ms. Nina Simone song 'Blackbird' inspired my painting 'Why u Wanna'. The song 'Blackbird' is a metaphor for the systemic oppression experienced by black women in America. The blackbird sits perched on a leafless branch & is unable to fly. It is weighed down by the burden of sadness & pain inflicted by a life lived in a system of daily oppression.’
