KERRY'S NOTES: ‘ MCMLXXII is Roman numerals for 1972 (the year I was born). I completed this work as I was about to turn 50. 'MCMLXXII' is a self portrait (of sorts). This painting is not how I see myself but how the world views women as they age. It takes a biting look as youth & fertility are replaced with grey hair, elongated features, a full stomach & saggy bosom. Removed from the traditional “male gaze” women experience cultural marginalization & a social devaluing.’
QUOTE: "Aging is a man’s destiny, something that must happen because he is a human being. For a woman, aging is not only her destiny, it is also her vulnerability." ---THE DOUBLE STANDARD OF AGING by Susan Sontag
